Following a smash debut such as Open Sesame wasn’t going to be easy but just five months after recording that masterpiece, trumpeter Hubbard (still only 22) again surrounded himself with some of NYC’s finest players for a dazzling sophomore effort. Utilizing the classic quintet line-up, tenor player Hank Mobley counter-balances Hub’s horn on the front-line while McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chamber! s’ bass and Philly Joe Jones’ drumming round it out. Blue Note’s hall-of-fame stable of trumpeters - Morgan, Byrd, Dorham and Hubbard - were astute all, to swap compositions and arrangements; two of Dorham’s finest were chosen for these 1960 dates in Karioka and Asiatic Race (aka Lotus Blossom). Cut from the original MONO master tapes by Bernie Grundman using Classic Records’ ALL TUBE pure MONO cutting system and pressed on Classic Records Quiex SV-P II proprietary “flat” profile.
