It was so promising that I argued that all orchestral sessions should have a double crew, one for commercial monoaural recording and the other for stereo experimentation.

The first such setup was used for Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony's recording of Berlioz' Damnation of Faust on February 21-22, 1954. Since there were soloists, we used three microphones, splitting the center one between the left and right tracks. The Ride to Hell section was so impressive, I used it on a demonstration tape that I later played for everyone who would sit still for it. This demo tape was lost, but a fragment of the famous Ride was saved from another take:
