The Age of Living Stereo, p. 3
Fritz Reiner had been appointed Music Director of the CSO in 1953, and his first recording was scheduled for March 6 and 8, 1954 - Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, Also sprach Zarathustra and Dance of the Seven Veils from Salome. The engineer, Les Chase, and I handled the stereo setup (that was called "binaural") as we had in Boston, and again set up two Neumann M-50 microphones. Not realizing that we were recording for posterity, we ran only a single machine.
Zarathustra was so dramatic, I used it as the opening of the demonstration tape. Here is an alternate take that was never used:
Also sprach Zarathustra - Fritz Reiner and the CSO - March 1954 (.wav format, 35 sec., 3.0Mb)
Also sprach Zarathustra - Fritz Reiner and the CSO - March 1954 (.au format, 35 sec., 1.5Mb)
